VERIO - Colocation Center Training Methodology

Objective: Verio, Inc. scheduled to open a number of collocation centers during its fiscal year. New buildings were being built, equipment was being installed, and new employees were being hired at each center. The employees had to learn about Verio and its business processes, how the facility works and functions in conjunction with other Verio sites, and how to operate the systems that serve the collocation customers.

Solutions: CMM Consulting Incorporated performed an assessment of the collocation center deployment, hiring plans, and the systems that were being put in place at each center. An introduction to Verio and a business processes overview was developed and delivered. Also, vendor training was selected as a Phase I solution, since business processes were still being developed within Verio and were not stable enough to transfer into meaningful customized training. The vendor training would only provide employees with an overview of the systems, but would be sufficient to allow employees to begin productive work at each site.

Phase II is just beginning. Phase II will begin with a task analysis, which will reveal the ever stabilizing tasks that employees perform at each site. It will also include learning about the vendor-supplied systems (i.e. software) as they specifically operate within Verio. To complete this task analysis, Verio employees at Sterling will be interviewed, Verio business process developers will be consulted, and vendor training will be audited.

Results: The Verio business processes overview and vendor-supplied training has been delivered to over 50 employees to date. Another 50 are scheduled for training before the end of the calendar year. Site managers, regional directors, and Vice Presidents have been extremely cooperative in developing and implementing training plans for each site. They are also eager to receive customized training that includes Verio-specific content, which will be the result of Phase II implementation.
